From Pre-Germanic *ǵulHom, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵwl̥H-o-m, from *ǵwelH- (to burn, shine). Related to Old Irish gúal (charcoal, coal), Sanskrit ज्वलति (jválati, to burn), Lithuanian žvìlti (to shine).[1]
