editFrom Proto-Balto-Slavic *tangīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *tongʰ-éye-ti, éye-causative of *tengʰ- (“to pull back, be heavy”). By surface analysis, *tǫgъ + *-iti. Doublet of *tęžiti, a Slavic construction.
