Past perfect

Is the following sentence grammatically O.K.? By now, Mat had collected his thoughts --Backinstadiums (talk) 15:50, 3 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Yes. You can say "now" when talking about a past time, when narrating a story or history. Equinox 23:21, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

That’s ancient history by now.

That’s ancient history by now : here the current definiton doesn't work --Backinstadiums (talk) 17:54, 20 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

This is just sum of parts. Kiwima (talk) 23:01, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mh, I guess, but what about from now on, up to now (an entry I created, admittedly)? +for now PUC08:41, 17 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@PUC: I guess the question is why "now" is privileged here—not sure these are any less SOP than up to that point, from the foundation of the Empire on, etc. I'm ambivalent on "by now" but the other two seem harder to justify to me. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 09:31, 17 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Surely WT:THUB applies to this sort of basic construct. I see lots of idiomatic translations in the box. This, that and the other (talk) 10:20, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Something tells me we should keep this. The translations for a start, and it seems to be a bit unique. DonnanZ (talk) 11:42, 29 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
It is SOP, but it should be kept per THUB. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 19:24, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Weak keep, I find this quite harmless. Fay Freak (talk) 12:19, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
