a critique and a query

A couple things which I think can be changed in the following:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page.

• On the default "skin" (I guess you call it), I don't see "Talk", I see "discussion". Therefore, I would add "(discussion)" after "Talk" in the first sentence.
• The only vote pages I have seen are those for administrators. I would eliminate the voting reference from the welcome greeting and include a reference on the administrator page that anyone can vote for administrators.
• We like people to use four tildes, instead of three, in order to see the date and time. Therefore, eliminate the three tilde option.

These changes, so far, produces:

• In the last sentence, I would add a reference to the Index because I think it has become more useful over the past month or so. But others might feel this isn't quite ready yet, and I can also agree with that statement, since I don't feel as though I am completely finished with it.

• Finally, the "ask me on my" brings me to the discussion below. I would like a variant of this to say "Dvortygirl" (if she is willing) which I would use on all odd-numbered days, and "[enter name of another volunteer administrator]" which I would use on all even-numbered days.

I believe that a newcomer should be welcomed by an administrator. I believe that's an administrator's job. But, it's not being done. So, since I believe it is very important to greet new people and make them feel welcomed here, I would like permission to welcome them with this standard welcome template. But I really don't feel qualified to answer their questions. I still feel like (and am) a newbie myself. That's why I wanted to use a variant template with an administrator's name - that way newcomers get the greeting timely (by my standards). Just one of those things that's been bugging me. I've been thinking about it more. It is much more valuable to have a personal message - if you need help see me - instead of the impersonal - if you need help see someone else. I should assume I am the more experienced of the two of us. If s/he comes to me with a query that's over my head (regardless of how many that might be) I can refer it to an administrator. I think getting a personalized message is far more friendly and more valuable. Therefore, I would propose changing the last paragraph of the welcome message to:

Mention Babel template?

Wouldn’t it be nice to mention the {{Babel}} template and suggest people use it on their user page? Since this is a multi-language dictionary, this information can come in handy. So that would be a link to Wiktionary:Babel. henne 09:20, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

ELE / CFI

Given the frequency with which we refer to "ELE" and "CFI" on discussion pages, I've added a note about those initialisms to the welcome message. --EncycloPetey 04:47, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

subst:

Is it correct to substitute this template? Outdated welcome messages don't need to be updated, do they? DAVilla 02:16, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

I should have thought subst'ing it is ok, the chance of Wiktionary changing that much are slim. I don't though - I spent an hour or so when removing the WS: shortcuts chugging through User_talk: pages where they had been welcomed with them. Conrad.Irwin 12:57, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

I notice that a bot went through, swapping {{welcome}} for {{subst:welcome}}. I was thinking of doing the same, although I'm not convinced it serves a great purpose. I suppose the idea is historical accuracy - preserve the welcome as it was when they received the welcome, not how it is now. Mglovesfun (talk) 18:39, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

The way I figure, if someone uses the template without substing it, he wants it to update over time, so it shouldn't be substed. I always subst welcome messages when I post them myself.​—msh210℠ 18:46, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

I placed a Usage section in the documentation subpage of this template with the note of the subst parameter. The change doesn't function tho as it doesn't show in the template's namespace. Is this how is it supposed to work? --BiblbroX дискашн 06:53, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

• I've put Since's proposed changes in a more readable form at http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/User:Ruakh/Test?diff=13830143. I'm actually not sure that I agree with even one of them. I certainly don't understand why the current version warrants a "Wow...", or why Since feels so confident about his/her proposal as to describe it as how the template "should be" without bothering to explain why. —Ruakh_TALK 17:46, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
  • Thank you for the diff! The only proposed change that makes sense to me is the one from "Our [[Wiktionary:Criteria for inclusion|Criteria for inclusion]] (CFI) define" to "Our [[Wiktionary:Criteria for inclusion|criteria for inclusion]] (CFI) define" (in the name of grammar).
