Etymology edit
Found in Medieval Latin as the diminutive *batac(ŭ)lare, *bādĭcŭlāre,[1][2] a word of native Latin origin that appeared to survive in Gallo-Roman dialects (Old French baaillier (“to yawn (due to hunger)”), attested 1120)[3]; a diminutive of the original verb badare (“to open the mouth”) (also batare). Therefore, the Italian term badare could have been a re-borrowing.[4]
Ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European base *bat, *bata-, imitative of a yawn or murmuring, see also Ancient Greek βατταλογέω (battalogéō, “I stammer”), βαὺ (baù), βαύζω (baúzō), Lithuanian baũbti (“to shout, to roar”), Latin baubor (“I bark, bay”).[5][6][7][8]
