Zip codes edit

Postal Code COACH ZARLINO (talk) 09:53, 8 November 2017 (UTC) This is a dictionary that defines words. We have nothing to do with zip codes. You are in the wrong place to do what you want to do. Equinox 09:48, 30 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank You edit

Was the word smog invented/created from the two words smoke and fog? Does the new word qualify as a portmanteau or neologism ? COACH ZARLINO (talk) 09:58, 30 December 2016 (UTC) ❓ COACH ZARLINO (talk) 09:56, 8 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, if you look at the etymology on the page "smog", it tells you it comes from smoke and fog. That's a portmanteau, or blend. But a neologism can be any newly-invented word, it doesn't matter how it was formed. Equinox 10:01, 30 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I am using voice recognition and apologize for any grammatical or syntax errors in advance.

Would you be interested in helping me document a portmanteau not a neologism?

etymology on the page "brending", it tells you it comes from branding and friending. The backstory is my little brother Marco called me on March 9th 2011 and told me he was going to accept my friend request on Facebook. Hahaha funny story Facebook as you know started on February 4th 2004 if you were 13 years old and had an email address prior to that you had a ba edu customer only. When I asked him why it took him almost seven years to accept my friend request he simply replied you are my older brother Johnny I already thought you were my friend. Hahaha funny story anyways from there we put on our thinking caps because we both like to do that and came up with the word brending. Hence the new portmanteau brending equals branding + friending because that's what you really do on social media is brand your friends they all want access to your list so they can peek into your life and see where you are and what you are eating don't forget to take a picture of your food and put it on blah blah blah anyways I need an advocate and somebody that knows what they are doing and you were so kind to respond to my ZIP code then instantly I appreciate that God bless you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year COACH ZARLINO (talk) 10:11, 30 December 2016 (UTC) 🇺🇸🕢 COACH ZARLINO (talk) 10:13, 8 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

We don't add words that somebody just made up. Try to get it into a real published book first. Equinox 10:16, 30 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Welcome edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

And just another quick note to you; I don't think it's a requirement here, but it bothered me personally when I saw this. I would personally recommend that you do not post lots of highly identifiable personal information anywhere on the site, especially as a new user (or maybe it's just me, as I'm sensitive about posting my own personal information on the internet, despite being an adult). Keep in mind that thousands of people might view this talk page in just a single day. Wiktionary is Wikipedia's sister project, so it's reasonably popular. However, the choice is yours.

If you do decide you want the information removed, I also recommend you contact an administrator after removing it (such as Equinox, whom you've already met). They can hide the previous revisions of this page before the content is removed, and they could also delete the talk page (less likely), which also hides it permanently.

Again, these words do not reflect site rules or policies AFAIK, but are just pieces of personal advice. PseudoSkull (talk) 22:13, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
