FinnishEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Finnic *aldas, a Germanic loan from Proto-Germanic *aldǭ (trough) (whence eg. Norwegian olda). The ending has probably been modified to -as by analogy with other Germanic loans (such as valas). Karelian allaš (trough) is of the same origin. Doublet with aalto.
