From the noun desmits (group of ten), from *desimtis by metathesis, from Proto-Baltic *dešimtis, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *déśimt with a suffix -(t)i-s marking collective number (“group of ten”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *déḱm̥t (ten).
