Etymology 1 edit
From Proto-Finnic *loodëh (compare Estonian loe, Ingrian looe, loove, Karelian luuveh (“west; southwest”), Livonian lūod, Ludian luodeh (“west”), Veps lode (“northwest; west”), lodeh (“northwest; west”), Votic looõ (“northwest, west”)), of uncertain further origin; theories include relation to luoda and luo (possibly a verb with like *luotaa (“to descend”)) and relation to etymology 2 (Germanic origin).[1]
