From Middle Dutch versûmen, from Old Dutch *farsūmen, from Proto-West Germanic *frasūmijan, from *sūmijan. By surface analysis, ver- +‎ zuimen, a verb which became obsolete in the early modern period. Compare German versäumen, Danish forsømme.
