  This course systematically introduces linguistic knowledge of Hong Kong Cantonese, helping students have a command of the phonological system and know all kinds of vocabulary and grammatical phenomena in Hong Kong Cantonese.   Mok et al. (2013) conducted a similar experiment on 28 speakers from Hong Kong. They used predictive discriminant analysis to analyse the experimental data, and at the same time, they measured the speakers' reaction time, but they did not find that the tones are completely merged. Thus, Mok et al. (2013) noted that speakers of Hong Kong Cantonese still had 6 tones, but it is just that their tonal range has become narrower.

This term is used to distinguish it from other varieties of Cantonese. It is normally simply known as 廣東話／广东话 (gwong2 dung1 waa6-2, “Cantonese”) by its speakers.
