Etymology

From ķemmē (“comb”), a borrowing from Low German, made into a second conjugation verb stem (ending -ēt). Alternatively, it may be a direct borrowing from Middle Low German [Term?] (cf. German kämmen (“to comb”)). First mentioned in 17th-century sources.
