Etymology

edit

Related to βῆναι (bênai) and thus βαίνω (baínō, step), though the exact morphology is uncertain.[1] One theory derives the word from βεβᾰ- (beba-), short-vowel grade of the stem of βέβηκα (bébēka, stand), the perfect of βαίνω (baínō, step), + -ιος (-ios).
