From Middle Persian ʾywk' ‎(*ēk, *yak) (Manichaean Middle Persian yk), from Proto-Iranian (compare Kurdish yek), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Haykas (compare Sanskrit एक ‎(éka), Hindi एक ‎(ek), Urdu ایک ‎(ek)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(H)óykos. Compare Old Persian [script needed] ‎(aiva-), Avestan [script needed] ‎(aēwa-) from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Haywas, from the variant Proto-Indo-European form *(H)óywos.
