Etymology

edit

Probably related to अक्षि (akṣi, eye), perhaps via a clipping of अभीक्ष्ण (abhīkṣṇa, constant, perpetual, every moment), which would be decomposed as अभि (abhi) + अक्षि (akṣi).[1] Compare German Augenblick (instant, moment) for a similar semantic development from the same root.
