Etymology 1Edit

Cognate with Northern Thai ᨦᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ງານ (ngān), ᦇᦱᧃ (ngaan), Tai Dam ꪉꪱꪙ, Shan ငၢၼ်း (ngáan), Tai Nüa ᥒᥣᥢᥰ (ngäan), and possibly Old Khmer ងារ៑ (ṅār) (whence Khmer ងារ (ngiə)) and Burmese ငန်း (ngan:).

Khanittanan (2001) suggested that it was borrowed from Old Khmer ងារ៑ (ṅār).[1]
