Borrowed from Sanskrit तालपत्त्र (tālapattra, palm leaf), from ताल (tāla, palm) + पत्त्र (pattra, leaf; paper; sheet; etc), equivalent to Thai ตาล (dtaan) +‎ ปัตร. Cognate with Modern Khmer តាលបត្រ (talbtâr).
