Derived from Pali maṇḍala (circle; disk; ring; etc), ultimately from Sanskrit मण्डल (maṇḍala, idem). Cognate with Lao ມົນທົນ (mon thon), Khün ᨾᩫ᩠ᨱᨵᩫ᩠ᩃ, Old Khmer mandala, Khmer មណ្ឌល (mŭəndŭəl).
