From Proto-Tai *kraᴬ (to seek). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩣ, Lao ຫາ (), ᦠᦱ (ḣaa), Tai Dam ꪬꪱ, Shan ႁႃ (hǎa), Ahom 𑜁𑜡 (khaa) or 𑜁𑜞𑜠 (khra), Zhuang ra, Saek หร่า.
