Etymology

From โคม (koom, “chandelier; lamp; lantern; etc.”) +‎ เขียว (kǐao, “green”); literally "green lantern".

The Venereal Disease Prevention Act, 127 Rattanakosin Era (พระราชบัญญัติป้องกันสัญจรโรค รัตนโกสินทรศก ๑๒๗), enacted by King Chulalongkorn on 13 March 126 Rattanakosin Era (1908 Common Era), required brothels to display lanterns outside their buildings, and green glass lanterns were commonly used, thereby giving rise to the term.
