Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (thî "umbrella") and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Doesn't resemble any word in the MSEA area for "umbrella"; was its original meaning "umbrella"? As a not-so-fundamental sense, the word's sense development would have to be traced back further for more accurate analysis. Resembles Old Chinese (OC *deː, *dje, “to raise, put forward”), and umbrellas happen to be tools put forward to block rain.”

Etymology 2

Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (thî "single, alone"). Luce gives Old Chinese (OC *dɯːɡ, “single, alone, special”) as a cognate.[1] This is semantically appealing, particularly with the existence of (OC *dɯɡ, “bull (male cow)”) and the "male suffix" sense for the Burmese, though the finals don't appear to match (more research needed into ST linguistics).”
