Compound of (shi, doing, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb する suru “to do”) +‎ 上がる (agaru, to go up, to be raised; to come to an end).[1] Compare the English expression to be done upto be done thoroughly.

The kanji for the first character is an example of phonetic ateji.[1]
