First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 누ᇇ곱〮 (Yale: nwùn-s-kwóp). Equivalent to (nun, eye) +‎ (gop, mucous discharge).
