- Keep. I think this expression is idiomatic, used without reflection by speakers who have never seen one. If some event is assigned this attribute, like last year‘s Android update for the TCL-10L, no one unfamiliar with the idiom would even think of applying this hyperbolic simile. German has the perfect equivalent wie ein Blitz aus heiterem Himmel, and I venture that the English expression out of the blue, contra the etymology presented there, is likewise short for something like “like a lighting bolt out of the blue sky”. Perhaps there is a Latin progenitor, and the ur-etymon possibly had a longer phrase, “as unexpected as ...”. --Lambiam 15:22, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
