Talk:live in poverty

Before I start this word article, let me point out: the term "living in poverty" is a contentious one.

I think it has two opposite meanings:

  1. having a cash income below the official poverty line
  2. actually experiencing poverty

Liberals and conservatives disagree over whether welfare recipients are living in poverty. Liberals say, we can't count in kind benefits (like subsidized housing, Medicaid or free public schools). We can't even count income tax rebates, SSI checks or other government cash handouts.

Conservatives deny that welfare recipients are still living in poverty, if the monetary value of the benefits combined with normal "income" raises the standard of living over the poverty level. --Ed Poor 15:09, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
