Hi. I temporarily made the source for WingerBot public. There are actually three repositories now:

• [1] has the original WingerBot code (mostly Arabic, some Russian code and some general tools such as rewrite.py for regex-based search/replace)
• [2] has most of the Russian code
• [3] has some additional Russian code, e.g. for auto-adding pronunciations

Not sure how long I will leave them public, so you might want to clone them now. Benwing2 (talk) 08:30, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

BTW there is a whole lot of code. If you are interested in writing your own code, check out some of the shorter scripts in RuNounChanges, and check out blib.py (a heavily modified version of code originally from CodeCat) and rulib.py (general Russian utility functions). @Benwing2 thanks, that's very helpful as a starting point, all cloned now. About the lua code in the repos, is this for reference or does the bot actually use it as well? If not, do you port code over from lua to python? – Jberkel (talk) 13:44, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

The Lua code is just older versions of the various modules that I've written, not used by the bots. I've ported some Lua code to Python, e.g. rulib.py is partly a port of Module:ru-common. I also ported all of Module:ar-translit for use in my bot script that harmonizes Arabic with its transliteration (transferring short vowel info from the transliteration to the Arabic script) and similarly for Module:ru-translit and Module:grc-translit. In many cases I actually have the bot call the Lua code using blib.expand_text(), which uses pywikibot's site.expand_text() call to expand template text. For example, when generating Russian non-lemma forms, I call {{ru-generate-noun-args}} and {{ru-generate-verb-forms}}, which generate all the inflections for a given noun or verb. I don't. The thing is, pywikibot makes life easy writing in Python, and I don't think there's any Lua equivalent. I imagine it would be a lot more work. What kind of things do you have in mind to create a bot for? Benwing2 (talk) 15:50, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Correct, it would be a lot more work, but it would make it easier for other editors who already know lua to contribute. Right now I'd like to create a bot for some things I'm doing manually, like replacing plain links with templates, and also to help out with WT:TASK. Jberkel (talk) 12:27, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

Well, a lot more people know Python than Lua ... I had to learn Lua specifically for Wiktionary. Python and Javascript are the two most common scripting languages. If you want to get started by modifying my code, check out something like fix_ru_phrase.py in RuNounChanges; this is a short script that converts head= parameters in {{ru-phrase}} invocations to use param 1= instead. It should be pretty easy to follow what's going on here (it uses pywikibot to handle loading and saving pages, and mwparserfromhell to handle parsing and changing templates; you have to install both of these packages first). I also have a script to specifically replace plain links with template calls (fix_links.py), but it's somewhat longer and more involved than fix_ru_phrase.py, because it tries to do various clever things (e.g. infer the correct language for the link, and automatically convert a parenthesized transliteration to a tr= argument, but only if it's sufficiently similar to the automatic transliteration of the term, so that it doesn't convert other random parenthesized notes into tr= arguments). You can write a much simpler script to do this if you have it confirm each change first. Benwing2 (talk) 18:34, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

Moving lists to Wikisaurus

I don't believe there is consensus for moving lists of synonyms out of mainspace to Wikisaurus. Hence my revert. I saw multiple people express dissatisfaction with syn lists being in Wikisaurus rather than in the mainspace which is why I never remove synonym lists from the mainspace. --Dan Polansky (talk) 14:35, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

I just noticed that you've dealt with the tickets that just came in. I only became an agent because nobody else was dealing with the backlog of tickets in the Wiktionary queue, but I would prefer not to have another responsibility on my plate. Salut !

J'espère que tout va bien pour toi ! Nous avons activé le module de traduction pour les Actualités et j'ai commencé à traduire le dernier numéro en anglais :) ça prend pas mal de temps donc je pense que la date de publication de la version traduite sera autour du 15 du mois, et nous verrons s'il y a assez d'aide pour que ça soit plus tôt les prochains mois. Sinon, je me souviens avoir lu un message de toi quelque part après la WikiCon, mais je ne retrouve plus où...m'avais-tu envoyé un courriel ou un mp quelque part ? Eisheilige

An IP added a rfc for this entry. I'm not sure how substantivised adjectives should be entered according to the conventions for German, but if the masculine should go to Eisheiliger, the feminine form can stay at the current entry. Could you look into the rfc? (Also, is /aɪ̯shaɪ̯lɪɡə/ the correct IPA transcription?) Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 15:31, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

I checked, it's actually somewhat complicated. There are 4 different saints for 4 different days (3 male + 1 female). So "die Eisheiligen" can refer to all of them, or possibly just the male saints. "die Eisheilige" unambiguously refers just to the female saint. "der Eisheilige" could refer to any of the 3 male saints. So yes, we do need an entry for Eisheiliger + an entry for (die) Eisheiligen (weak declination + article). Duden currently only lists the latter (although the singular clearly exists). I'm not an IPA expert but the transcription looks correct. – Jberkel (talk) 23:20, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Placenames that don't take an article

You may want to create a templatised usage note for that, since very many placenames fall under this category (most names of cities, for example). — Ungoliant ^(falai) 12:52, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

I think that's too broad – the usage notes should only mention exceptions to general rules (i.e. cities which take the article, like Porto, or countries which don't take an article). It might still make sense to create a template to avoid copy&paste though, even if it is just for a few entries. Jberkel (talk) 13:52, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Something I've considerde doing is adding this information to the headword-line template, so that the HWL of an entry like Portugal would says "Portugal (m, doesn't take an article)", possibly with a link to some appendix. What do you think? — Ungoliant ^(falai) 15:42, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Don't think that's worth the trouble, given that there aren't that many entries which need it. It will also make the HWL template more complex.
