Etymology edit
From Middle Dutch behoeven, from Old Dutch *bihuovon, from Proto-Germanic *bihōbōną. Equivalent to be- + hoeven. Cognate with English behove (“to be necessary for”), obsolete German behufen (cf. Behuf), Danish behøve (“to need”), Norwegian behøve (“to need”), Swedish behöva (“to have use for, to need”).
