belämmern
German
editAlternative forms
edit- belemmern (pre-1996)
Etymology
editFrom belemmern. The 1996 reform spelling is mainly based on popular etymology, which often links the word to Lamm (“lamb”). On the other hand, it is related with lahm and lähmen, which somewhat justifies the -ä- etymologically.
Pronunciation
editVerb
editbelämmern (weak, third-person singular present belämmert, past tense belämmerte, past participle belämmert, auxiliary haben)
- (transitive) to annoy
Usage notes
edit- The spelling belämmern has been the prescribed spelling since the German spelling reform of 1996 (the Rechtschreibreform). In the affected areas, the previous spelling (belemmern) is now less common, and may be regarded as a misspelling.
