Unsage note: Note that einläuten and einleiten have similar, but not identical meanings.

Einleiten means a causal connection, einläuten a correlative one.

"Die Flut leitete den Untergang des Dorfes ein," means: The flood was the first or initial cause of the fall.

"Das Jahr 1978 läutete den Untergang des Dorfes ein", means: In 1978 the last chapter of the village began, like bells announcing the evening.
