Etymology 1

19th century, of uncertain origin. Possibly from knollig, knöllig (lumpy, chunky”, obsolete also “massive), for which there are early attestations in the context of excessive drinking; further from Knolle (lump, tuber). Alternatively from knüllen (to scrunch, crumple”, obsolete also “to beat, bump, fuck).
