Verb edit

nuscheln (weak, third-person singular present nuschelt, past tense nuschelte, past participle genuschelt, auxiliary haben)

  1. to mumble (to speak unclearly, with poor enunciation)
Das ist kein Dialekt, das ist nur genuscheltes Hochdeutsch.
This is not a dialect, it’s just mumbled standard German.

Usage notes edit

  • Nuscheln is distinct from murmeln (“to speak with insufficient audibility”).
  • The verbs nuscheln and wuscheln seem to be the only two German words of native origin in which the sound [ʒ] is heard.
