From Javanese ꦥꦶꦢꦤ (pidana, court punishment), from Old Javanese pīḍana (pressing or squeezing; of oppressing, paining, afflicting), from Sanskrit पीडन (pīḍana, press, suppress). Semantic loan from Dutch strafrecht (criminal law, literally punishment law) as Dutch straf (punishment, penalty, sanction).
