editEtymology
editFrom Middle Vietnamese tlò. As shown by the Middle Vietnamese form and as well as usage of 路 (MC luH) as phonetic in Nôm texts, the earlier form of this word had initial cluster and can not be derived from 徒 (MC du).
Pronunciation
editNoun
edit- trick; artifice
- Làm trò gì vậy? ― What trickery are you up to?
- comedy; amusement
- play; game; facetiousness
- Short for học trò (“pupil”).
Pronoun
edit- (dated) you (used by a teacher when talking to a student in their class)
- 1997, J. K. Rowling, chapter 11, in Lý Lan, transl., Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone [Harry Potter và Hòn Đá Phù Thủy], Nhà Xuất Bản Trẻ [Tre Publishing House], published 2006:
- Unfortunately, something about their guilty faces caught Snape's eye. He limped over. He hadn’t seen the fire, but he seemed to be looking for a reason to tell them off anyway. “What’s that you’ve got there, Potter?”
- Xui xẻo là những bộ mặt… tội lỗi của chúng làm thầy Snape để ý. Thầy cà nhắc lê chân tới. Thầy không nhìn thấy ngọn lửa, nhưng có vẻ như thầy đang cố tìm ra một chuyện gì đó để mà la rầy bọn nhỏ. “Trò cầm cái gì đó, Potter?”
Usage notes
edit- Although the use of trò as a pronoun is pretty much non-existent in current spoken Vietnamese as it is seen as too distant and formal, it is still commonly used and seen in translation works from other languages, especially Western literature.
