Inherited from Proto-Turkic *et (meat).

The archaic sense "meat" is preserved in the Viryal dialect as set phrases ӳт шӳрпи (üt šürp̬i, meat broth) and ӳте кӗр (üt̬e k̬ĕr, to break fast) (lit. "to enter into meat").
