Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀨𑁂𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆 (*phekk), perhaps metathesised from Sanskrit क्षिप् (kṣip, to throw). Cognate with Gujarati ફેંકવું (pheṅkvũ), Marathi फेकणे (phekṇe).
