Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀭𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆 (*rokk, to stop), probably further related to Sanskrit रुध् (rudh, to stop) and Prakrit 𑀭𑁄𑀟𑁂𑀇 (roḍei, stops). Cognate with Punjabi ਰੋਕਣਾ (rokṇā) / روکنا (roknā), Sindhi روڪَڻُ / रोकणु (rokaṇu), Nepali रोक्नु (roknu), Bengali রোকা (rōka), Gujarati રોકવું (rokvũ), and Marathi रोखणे (rokhṇe).
