Etymology edit

From Pali pubbakārī (literally one who does first; one who is first to do favour), from pubba (first; primary; etc) + kārī (doer); equivalent to Thai บุพ (bùp) +‎ การี. Cognate with Modern Khmer បុព្វការី (bopvɔɔkaarii).
