From Pali pubbakārī (literally “one who does first; one who is first to do favour”), from pubba (“first; primary; etc”) + kārī (“doer”); equivalent to Thai บุพ (bùp) + การี. Cognate with Modern Khmer បុព្វការី (bopvɔɔkaarii).
