From Proto-Tai *swɯːnᴬ (garden). Compare Middle Chinese (MC hjwon, “garden”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈ᩠ᩅᩁ, Lao ສວນ (sūan), ᦷᦉᧃ (ṡon), Shan သူၼ် (sǔun), Ahom 𑜏𑜤𑜃𑜫 (sun), Zhuang suen.
