From Proto-Tai *manᴬ (singular third-person pronoun (strong)). Cognate with Isan มัน, Lao ມັນ (man), Northern Thai ᨾᩢ᩠ᨶ, Khün ᨾᩢ᩠ᨶ, Tai Dam ꪣꪽ, Shan မၼ်း (mán), Ahom 𑜉𑜃𑜫 (man), Zuojiang Zhuang minz/mwnz, Zhuang minz/faenz.
