From Old Khmer chley, chlœya (to answer; to reply; to respond; etc). Compare Modern Khmer ឆ្លើយ (chlaəy), extended as ចំឡើយ (cɑmlaəy, answer; reply; response), from which Thai จำเลย (jam-ləəi, defendant) was derived.
