From Old Georgian ალი (ali). Related to Mingrelian ალი (ali, blaze, flame, fire), Laz ალი (ali), Svan ჰელ (hel); Chechen алу (alu, fire), Ingush ала (ala), Ossetian ала (ala, soot), and, possibly, Avar лахӏ (laḥʳ, soot).
