Described by Tao Zongyi (1329–1410) as a tree native to Uyghuristan, this is likely a borrowing from Uyghur سۆكسۆك (söksök); compare Turkmen sazak, Mongolian ᠵᠠᠭ (ǰag) / заг (zag), Kazakh сексеуіл (sekseuıl), Uzbek saksovul, Russian саксау́л (saksaúl), English saxaul.
