software design

edit

Is this any less SOP than the previous one - architecture design, fashion design, highway design, skyscraper design... --Hekaheka (talk) 06:32, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not to me. delete -- Liliana 09:32, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Delete, Sae1962's definition is probably wrong or just a unnecessarily convoluted one to make it sounds less like the design of software. Mglovesfun (talk) 10:01, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Keep even though the definition seems off. Set phrase, and a sense (or at least connotation) that (deprecated template usage) design doesn't seem to carry. --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 22:45, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Would you mind to explain. In which way does "design" not carry the sense of "design" in "software design"? --Hekaheka (talk) 23:20, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, it's (usually) not exactly (deprecated template usage) art, and it's not really a (deprecated template usage) plan. I don't really mind deleting this, but I think (deprecated template usage) design should be improved to more explicitly include this. --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 23:39, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Delete. It is the design of software. I work in this field (more or less). Equinox 22:47, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Delete. Firstly, I do think that software design is "design" in the same sense as (say) "circuit design"; but secondly, even if software design were a completely different kind of "design" from any other, the fact would remain that software folks regularly use "design", sans "software", in exactly this way. Hence "application design", "program design", "object-oriented design", "database design", etc., etc., etc. —RuakhTALK 23:18, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Delete. software + design (A plan (with more or less detail) for the structure and functions of [...] (a) system.). Ungoliant MMDCCLXIV 23:49, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Delete: sum of parts. — TAKASUGI Shinji (talk) 00:04, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Μετάknowledge may have a point in saying that neither "plan" nor "art" fully reflects software design as disciplined professional activity. Same critic applies to other non-artistic types of designing, such as "highway design". Perhaps the sixth definition "The art of designing" should be expanded a bit, like to "The art and practice of designing" or something similar. --Hekaheka (talk) 05:59, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not perfect, but that would make me happier... --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 17:24, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Keep as a translation target. --Anatoli (обсудить) 03:06, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ugh, does anything that's even slightly interesting have to be kept as a translation target? One person suggested the weather in London at one point as a translation target. We provide translations for English terms, we don't provide English terms only for translations, that's the difference. Mglovesfun (talk) 10:20, 16 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
