Welcome

edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Equinox 01:14, 10 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Appendix:Glossary

edit

I feel you. It's very incomplete, poorly laid out (compare ru:Викисловарь:Условные сокращения), and the pair Wiktionary:GlossaryAppendix:Glossary is rather confusing. --Per utramque cavernam (talk) 16:30, 24 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

I never even knew Wiktionary:Glossary existed until just now. —Globins 16:44, 24 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

-ācija

Can you explain why you replaced {{etyl}} with a bit of text? —Rua (mew) 19:33, 27 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Rua, {{etyl}} is in the process of being deprecated, I think, or it's being deleted for some reason (it says that on the template page). I had just been going through the pages in Category:etyl cleanup no target/language and removing the etyls from them. —Globins 00:29, 28 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

kalā

edit

How come my edit that included Hawaiian for this word was reverted? There's a series of Kulāiwi language lessons that can be found on YouTube. —Michaelsokolsky (talk) 00:31, 7 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

You removed other content on the page when you made the edit, so it seemed like vandalism. You can create the Hawaiian section, but don't remove things from other languages on the page. —Globins (yo) 01:01, 7 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

search up

edit

If you have any thoughts on search up, see Wiktionary:Tea_room/2020/September#search_it_up. I was thinking it might be much more commonly used by younger people. Vox Sciurorum (talk) 10:10, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bringing back ƿynn entries

edit

Dear Globins, hello, I'm sorry for bothering you, there was a vote to remove all ƿynn entries and you voted against option 1 - Wiktionary:Votes/2020-09/Removing_Old_English_entries_with_wynns.

There is a discussion about it on the Wiktionary:Beer parlour/2020/November page - [[1]]I only wanted to ask if there were a vote to bring the entries back, would you support it? Sorry for bothering again. Birdofadozentides (talk) 23:05, 23 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
