Borrowed from Arabic النِّيل (an-nīl) via Andalusian Arabic, from Classical Persian نیل (nīl, “indigo”), from Middle Persian 𐭭𐭩𐭫 (nyl /nīl/), ultimately from Sanskrit नील (nīla, “blue”).
