From Old Portuguese amẽaçar, a variant of mẽaçar, either from mẽaça (threat) + -ar, or from a hypothetical Vulgar Latin *admināciāre (to threaten) < *mināciāre (threaten), from *minācia (threat), from Latin mināx, mināciae. Cognate with English menace. Compare Catalan amenaçar, French menacer, Galician ameazar, Italian minacciare, Occitan amenaçar, Romanian amenința, Sicilian amminazzari, Spanish amenazar.
