From Malay bangsal, from Classical Malay bangsal, from Hindi भनसाल (bhansāl, “storehouse”), from earlier भण्डसाल (bhaṇḍasāl), भण्डसार (bhaṇḍasār), from Sanskrit भाण्डशाला (bhāṇḍaśālā, “storehouse, magazine”), from भाण्ड (bhāṇḍa) + शाला (śālā).
- Sense of hall is a semantic loan from Javanese ꦧꦁꦱꦭ꧀ (bangsal, “mansion”), which cf above.
- Sense of ward is a semantic loan from Dutch zaal (“ward”, literally “room, hall”).
