From German Low German dösen, from Middle High German dōsen (to snooze, slumber" also "to roar, rustle, whizz, snore), from Old High German dōsōn (to roar), from Proto-West Germanic *þus- (to roar), related to Middle High German dœsen, tœsen (to scatter, destroy); ultimately from the root of Dunst (haze). Compare dösig for more.
