From Middle High German vunkeln, iterative of vunken (to spark), derived from the noun vunke, whence modern Funke(n) (a spark). By surface analysis, funken +‎ -eln. Cognate with Dutch fonkelen, Middle Low German vunkeln (to sparkle).
