From Proto-Finnic *pühä, from Proto-Finno-Permic *pišä. Cognates include Erzya пежеть (pežetʹ, “sin”). Alternatively possibly from a Germanic language, compare Proto-Germanic *wīhaz (“sacred, holy”), German weihen.
